MOÇAMBIQUE

The Alto Ligonha Pegmatite Province In North-Western Mozambique hosts numerous pegmatites with the potential to produce rare metal and rare earth elements. These are rare earth and potassic type pegmatites which are abundant in the region and which are also frequently tantalite and niobium bearing.

Three exploration licenses in the Alto Ligonha region selected for their prospective to host pegmatitic REE deposits. The licenses overlie many pegmatites, of which 6 have recorded REE mineralization of monazite, euxenite, samarskite, fergusonite and xenotime. Part of these pegmatites have recorded tantalum and niobium mineralization. The three licenses were issued in mid-2011. The one of the three of the concessions were mined at a small scale for their REE content in the 60’s. The resulting concentrate was exported to England.

The deposit is not known only for its kaolin and feldspar production, but also for the presence of a number of other minerals – samarskite, zircon, monazite, xenotime and others
